Want to know if you and your fur baby are a paw-fect match? Your dog’s personality may just be written in the stars. Here is how pet astrology works.

Astrology isn’t a practice that’s exclusive to humans.

Knowing your dog’s star sign could tell you a lot about them, from their personality to the activities they find fun.

What is pet astrology?

Astrology is a belief system that suggests the movements and positions of the celestial bodies can influence an individual’s personality, behaviour, destiny and compatibility with others, pet behaviourist and Petstock ambassador Lara Shannon explains.

“It’s a fascinating concept that offers insights into various aspects of human life based on the positions of planets and stars at the time of birth,” Lara says.

Just as astrology can shine a light on who we are and what makes us tick, it can do so for our pets.

“By understanding your pet’s star sign, you can gain valuable insights into their unique traits, preferences and behaviours,” Lara says.

“It’s a fun and enlightening way to deepen your bond with your furry companions.”

Can a dog’s breed predict its personality?

While pet astrology can be a fun way to determine your dog’s personality, Lara says it’s important not to overlook the influence of breed.

“Different breeds were bred for different purposes,” she notes.

“For instance, Border Collies are renowned for their intelligence and high energy levels, while Bulldogs are typically more laid-back and affectionate.

“By considering both astrology and breed traits, along with individual nuances, pet owners can gain a more comprehensive understanding of their furry companion’s behaviours and needs.”

How do you know your dog’s star sign?

“Determining your pet’s star sign is as simple as knowing their date of birth,” Lara says.

“Similar to humans, pets have birth dates that correspond to specific zodiac signs.

“However, if your pet is adopted and you don’t know their birthday, you can still engage in this fun activity by estimating their birth month, or even matching a star sign to their personality traits.”

Lara recommends consulting a pet astrologer, or using the internet to determine your dog’s star sign and explore the traits associated with it.

What does your dog’s star sign mean?

If you’re curious to learn what your dog’s star sign could predict about them, here’s what Lara has to say:

Aquarius (January 20 to February 18)

Independent and clever, an Aquarius dog needs an owner who can respect its freedom, and who challenges them mentally.

These furkids crave mental stimulation, interactive games and learning new tricks, but they may be a bit stubborn at times.

Pisces (February 19 to March 20)

Pisces dogs are gentle and affectionate, forming strong bonds with empathetic and nurturing owners.

They tend to love cuddles and activities involving water, and get along well with other gentle-natured pets.

However, they may feel anxious and stressed in unfamiliar environments, so it’s important to give your dog plenty of reassurance and patience.

Aries (March 21 to April 19)

Dogs born under the sign of Aries are lively and confident, and seek energetic and active company, either from their owners or from other pets.

They love outdoor activities and games, and can enjoy these for long periods, so an ideal owner will be one who can match this energy.

Firm leadership is important to make sure an Aries dog is able to channel its enthusiasm appropriately.

Taurus (April 20 to May 20)

Taurus dogs are loyal and committed, bonding strongly with reliable and patient owners, as well as other grounded pets.

They enjoy a comfortable and predictable routine with lots of lounging around, but they are especially stubborn and need a sense of security.

These furkids make the ideal companion for a night in, with plenty of cuddles and treats on offer.

Gemini (May 21 to June 20)

These dogs are resilient and intelligent, enjoying their owner’s company and the mental stimulation they provide.

While they enjoy being challenged, Gemini dogs may get distracted easily; they crave social interaction, especially with other pets, to keep them from feeling lonely or bored.

With a personality that can change quickly from being calm to full of energy, a furry Gemini is sure to keep its owners on their toes.

Cancer (June 21 to July 22)

Warm-hearted and motivated by emotion, dogs born under Cancer enjoy cuddling, gentle play and swimming with their family.

Their sensitive nature might make them anxious or moody when alone, so they need a calm and supportive environment that provides emotional security.

While they can be a little overwhelmed by loud noises or overstimulating environments, these dogs are natural nurturers who are protective of their family members.

Leo (July 23 to August 22)

Leo dogs are confident and crave attention from an owner who showers them with love, affection and praise.

They enjoy walks in the park, meeting new people, and interactive play – but they may have jealousy or dominance issues because of their desire for attention, requiring consistent boundaries and positive reinforcement training.

Virgo (August 23 to September 22)

Virgo dogs are hardworking, kind and able to form strong bonds with owners who appreciate their intelligence and attention to detail.

They enjoy activities that stimulate their mind, such as learning new tricks and interactive games, and thrive in structured environments with clear routines.

However, their perfectionism may lead to anxiety or excessive analysis of situations, and they might need time to adjust to new environments or people.

Libra (September 23 to October 22)

These dogs are social and non-confrontational, and bond well with owners who provide a peaceful environment.

Libra dogs enjoy companionship, thrive in households with multiple pets, and appreciate activities that promote balance and harmony, such as gentle play and quiet interactive games.

Because of their aversion to conflict, they could be sensitive to loud noises or aggressive behaviour from other pets, and may need reassurance during times of stress or change.

Scorpio (October 23 to November 21)

Loyal and brave, these dogs form deep connections with owners who earn their trust and respect.

Scorpio dogs enjoy exploring and may excel in activities that engage their curiosity and intelligence, such as scent work and agility training.

Their secretive nature may lead to possessiveness or territorial behaviour, requiring consistent boundaries and socialisation, and they may also hold grudges or be slow to forgive.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Dogs born under the sign of Sagittarius are adventurous and spontaneous, and deeply connect with owners who share their love for exploration and excitement.

Thriving on freedom and outdoor activities, they enjoy hiking, running, and playing in wide-open spaces.

But owners beware – their independent nature may lead four-legged Sagittarians to wander or escape if not properly supervised or stimulated.

Capricorn (December 22 to January 19)

Capricorn dogs are persevering and practical, forming strong bonds with owners who provide structure and consistency.

They thrive on routine and may excel in activities that require focus and determination, such as obedience training and agility courses, and appreciate praise and rewards for their efforts.

These dogs may require patience and understanding as their seriousness can lead to aloofness or stubbornness; and they may also need plenty of encouragement to relax and enjoy leisure activities.
